Griffiths, Walter & Co. Ltd. | Guinea Detective Camera | Other | Quarter Plate

GUINEA DETECTIVE CAMERA. 1891. A box-form plate camera for 3 1/4 inch by 33/4 inch images, disguised as a carrying case or lunch-box. The case is an integral part of the camera, and cannot be separated and lost, as with some other detective cameras. Elastic-band-powered guillotine shutter. Provision for three double plate-holders, but for half a guinea extra the buyer could have a 12 plate magazine camera of the same appearance. The Griffiths Company operated from 1891 to 1901 at Hightgate Square, Birmingham. For more about the 19th Century detective camera craze see under 'Watson Detective Camera'.
