Redding, H.J. | Luzo Plate Camera | English | Whole Plate

ENGLISH FIELD CAMERA. 1900-05. The firm was Redding and Giles until 1899, then Redding and Co until 1905, when they became Redding and Co. Ltd. This camera has a makers' brass label saying 'H.J. Redding and Co., Luzo Registered Trade Mark, 3 Argyll Place, Regent Street, London. W.' So, Co. without Ltd. indicates a date between 1900 and 1905. Redding had the patent and manufacturing rights on the 'Luzo' mahogany box cameras, the first British camera to accept rollfilm, and for which the firm is best known. I had not realised until I saw this camera that they also made plate cameras under the Luzo mark and, this one, with the lens board carried on vertical brass rods, is a design unique in my experience.
