DARKROOM LAMP. MID C19th. Marked with 'M&B' makers' mark, but I have no idea who they were. Described on its box as a 'Lampe a essence', which as I understand it literally means petrol lamp, but I certainly wouldn't be brave enough to use it with petrol. Maybe paraffin or even whale oil? But indicative of the lengths people will go to practice the wonderful art of photography.
